OK. I identify with bears as much as with any other group.

But.

I am so very, very, very sick of being dicked over in the name of The Community. Yet. Again. Time and money and work down the toilet, and all sorts of Drama and Behaviour. I certainly understand the urge to flounce. So I am not inclined to condemn people either for "staying" or for "leaving", if those terms even mean anything in this context. But I am daily less inclined to put any resources into anything just because it's bear-themed.

It's cumulative, so no one thing.

Not poster-bear. Retro-bear.

at risk of a potential flaming (therefore i'm donning my asbestos firesuit right now) i find it interesting when "bears" talk about how they're judged for being who they are (i.e. being larger, hairier, what have you) and then turn around and judge someone for who THEY are (they're not big enough / hairy enough / muscular enough / masculine enough). Or even better, person X is a drama queen, meanwhile the "bear" saying this has more issues than time magazine.

what's that phrase about doth protesting too much?

(and yes, i know not EVERYONE is like that)

Well merely making a post like this qualifies me for the Drama award. So yeah there you go.

But I was thinking about this in a larger context the other day - when the powerless gain power, there is the almost-irresistible urge to be sadistic. I was thinking about it in a sexual context, but I think it applies to social interactions in general. Being oppressed does not teach you humility, it teaches hatred; which for me is as good a reason as any to oppose discrimination etc, any systematic discim is creating a class of people schooled in how to oppress.

You've got that just right. And don't forget the bears who get berated for daring to find a non-bear attractive. (I've had that happen and had people in the local bear group spread rumors that I only liked twinks to anyone who might have found me attractive to get them to stay away.) Bears can be more ridiculous than a lot of gays. That's one reason I left the Buffalo Bears. I go out to bear night sometimes to see friends but don't associate with the group itself.

I'm sorry to hear that.

I don't know if this is relevant, but this is my 2 cents: I find that sometimes bear groups try to be more than they are. Its a social group, it's about fun, it's about being ourselves and celebrating that.
It's not about politics, not about our whole lives, not about exclusivity.

I am so very sorry about the time, money and work down the toilet. Especially the work. Ah well.

If I had the energy for it, I would try to interrogate rigorously at some point in the scheme of things why I can't seem to connect with the whole Bear community thing. Maybe it's pure snobbery on my part. I have to admit I groan inwardly whenever I receive an e-mail that includes the word "Bear-aoke."

hugs, Shimmer

I could write an identical post about a different subculture group that I identify with but am also tired of.

Right down to the "you have to support this because you're a member of P and this is P-themed and now we're going to waste a lot of your time."

Ask Nayland, or Marie, about what they had to suffer through at an event I was part of, and the nice smile I had on my face the whole time, trying to be a good Friend of P. To the point that Nayland and Marie couldn't tell how bored and annoyed I was. ;-) But I'm increasingly OVER it.

It's all so boring to me. These subculture/out-of-the-mainstream groups end up conforming via nonconformity. Hardly as cool as they seem to think, and twice as boring. I never did like those "too cool for school" types - of any stripe.

Be invested in the people who love you, go where they are, and be grateful for what you have. You're no more 'cool' in a room full of people like you drinking the same tea than you are on the sidewalk with every diversity represented. Besides - needing to identify oneself vicariously through certain specific commonalities in order to feel validated is kind of sad, really. We're not the same, we're not supposed to be the same.

The places you belong are where people who love you are. The people who love you in spite of your flaws, idiosyncrasies, or sexual proclivities. Now pass me some pho...

Sounds like an icky situation...

I've been pretty lucky --- the only "Community" I'm really seriously involved in (the montreal poly community) has so far managed to remain surprisingly drama free... But I've been on the sidelines for some amazingly petty squabbling in other communities here.

Unfortunately I think there are always people around who will take advantage of other people's willingness to contribute to a good cause.

Any chance of some good still coming out of the time/work/money you put into things?

Now I almost feel guilty for continuing to be involved in the "mainstream" B**r C*mm*n*ty.

I have tried, since the beginning, to stress the good parts and try to marginalize the bad parts. I don't tolerate excluding anyone who wants to be part of the tribe.

I'd like to think that I'm still part of the "real" B**r C*mm*n*ty that organizes a wide variety of fun activities that just happen to do something to make the world a better place.
