Three more portfolio reviews today.

Some really good connections.

If it wasn't already apparent, the kind of work I do is not in vogue at the moment LOL

In your opinion, what _is_ in vogue at the moment?

Casual, candid, not-composed, manipulated colour, low tech, informal, faux-candid. Urban decay. Repurposed found materials. Photoshop.

Of course for every artist using them brilliantly there are 50 who don't understand why they're doing it, just doing it cause the popular girls are doing it.

Amen! I was wondering what your response would be. Actually, I'm fairly frustrated with several students I have in my digital photo class. The talked about animation all semester long. I asked them, "What about THIS class?" I asked the entire class to make photo web galleries with artist statements. The animation students actually had the nerve to say all they cared about was animation and wrote not a single word about the photos in the web gallery taken in class. I'm saying all that because I always have to get them to unlearn Photoshop and learn how to use the camera yet, it seems to make little to no impression in the end. Obviously, they're only getting average grades.

And, in a couple of weeks we will see about the BPBLG pics. ;-)

BPBLG?

I think with students the playing field is a little bit different - and it's much easier to immerse yourself in tech than to learn the hard trick of thinking critically about whatever you do. I mean it's easy to measure "success" when it's defined as "competent use of tools" right? it gets really difficult when trying to assess whether one is doing what one is supposed to and just because other people aren't getting it does that necessarily mean I'm doing it wrong? messy :)

As trite as this may sound, neither were a large number of artists.

Your work is brilliant. That will shine though.

Start shooting pics of street kids and watch your booking go up. Shoot pictures of cars totaled in accidents, put them in red frames if someone died in the accident and watch them say it makes a statement.

Problem is, these are not your vision. As such, not worth your time.

in or out of vogue, it doesn't matter. Your vision is what matters, it shines.

There really is no choice in my case, it has to be rewarding in and of itself or there's no point in my doing it. I'm one of those people who does art cause he can't not. It's not a matter of defying the trends or whatever.

Then you can go in a spree, but if your work represents your vision and the changes are in reason, perhaps your seen as the one that was right.

Yea I know, and Monkeys can fly out of my butt, but I still like your work.

There's something to be said for composition, I was about to go on a bit of a spiel about it but I lost my train of thought. What I do know is that a composed image has more of an emotional impact for me, which makes it all the more beautiful.
I can't make any of my sentences make sense for some reason. Bed time.

Well not surprisingly I think composition is the single most important element of an image. But that's just me.

Then for one brief and shining moment everyone had to have a picture of a dark skinned man holding fruit on their wall. It was a wonderful time to be alive.

Re: [info]fargonrob's comment about shooting pics of street kids, I can just see you bringing kids off the street into the studio and getting them to pose in the manner to which you are accustomed. (Er, no.) But I don't think that's what he had in mind.

Also, I think that if you want your pictures in Vogue, your subjects will need to have more clothes on. ;-)

We explore what we are intuitively drawn to. I've always been a huge fan of what you do and I'm am internationally unknown... so... it must be worth something!

However... I feel your pain a little with regard to all the over photoshopped looks that are so popular right now. That hard edged thing that just looks like an illustration... not photography... is everywhere. I have nothing against illustration... I think it can be quite wonderful... but the line has been blurred between the two... I've played with it a little... but it never looks right to my eye for my work... not entirely... but I've always been more "Group f 64" purist than anything.

And yes... the pendulum swings... and at some point... all this over processing will look like mullets and fluorescent shoelaces.

Glad you're making connections.

Trends come and go, but I think the swing away from surrealism has already begun. Your work is unique and very 'you' in the execution, comp and processing. I love it.
